Our Program

Educational plans (IEP) based on objectives from the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards are developed for each student. Students are placed in small classrooms of no more than eleven students and are instructed by a New Jersey State certified Special Education teacher as well as at least one teacher assistant to ensure that each student receives individual attention and can progress at their own rate. We provide a structured environment and set clear goals so that our students know what to expect. We strive to make learning meaningful so that students can better retain what they have learned and encourage them to be active participants in learning and independent, curious thinkers. Children work both independently and as part of a group to maximize opportunities for social interaction and communication. Our program stresses continuity and integration of subject matter.

LCEC is vitally interested in the development of the whole child. In addition to providing an individualized and stimulating academic experience, we also offer art, physical education, music, world language, and computer classes.

Special services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, behavior therapy, and counseling are also provided to students as required by individual IEPs.

Developing social skills and behavior management techniques is an integral part of our program. We believe in a team approach where the classroom teacher, therapists, social worker, and behaviorists work together to develop a specialized plan for each student. Our students also benefit from a school wide behavior modification program. Based on positive reinforcement, this token economy system encourages students to work towards activities such as special field trips, activity days, and shopping at a school store.
